Today's Final Jeopardy - Tuesday, June 18, 2024 (2024)

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the June 18, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Geographic Name’s Almost The Same) for Tuesday, June 18, 2024 (Season 40, Game 202):

Legend says in 1876 a dragon built for the first “Ring” Cycle had its neck sent to this Mideast capital, not the right German city

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Colleen Matthews, a speech-language pathologist from Portland, Oregon
Today's Final Jeopardy - Tuesday, June 18, 2024 (1)
Mark Gagliardi, an actor & podcaster originally from Knoxville, Tennessee
Today's Final Jeopardy - Tuesday, June 18, 2024 (2)
Adriana Harmeyer, an archivist from West Lafayette, Indiana (14-day total: $326,000)
Today's Final Jeopardy - Tuesday, June 18, 2024 (3)

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Adriana Harmeyer is now a 14-game winner on Jeopardy!; she goes for win #15 today. Yesterday, she also joined Ken Jennings, Larissa Kelly, Tom Cubbage, Ben Ingram, James Holzhauer, Jennifer Quail, Amy Schneider, and Ray Lalonde as the only players to get 10 consecutive Final Jeopardy clues correct.

I have to say, a long-running champion like Adriana who is averaging less than $25,000 a win is great for the show’s bean-counters, as it gets the superchamp buzz without overspending the prize budget. Additionally, the fact that her games aren’t dominant runaways either makes for a more suspenseful show overall.

According to 1946’s The Life of Richard Wagner, the neck of a dragon built for the inaugural Bayreuth Festival in 1876 did not make it to Bayreuth, as the London designers of that neck had sent it to the similar-sounding Beirut, Lebanon instead.

If I were on stage trying to solve this Final, it would have taken a lot to avoid groaning at about the 10-second mark once I realized that “Bayreuth” and “Beirut” were the similar-sounding names referred to by clue and category here.

I also think that we’ll be seeing more Final Jeopardy clues similar to today’s (and yesterday’s); as I do believe that Michael Davies wants to include more “puzzle”-type clues as opposed to clues that solely reward memorizing the contents of J! Archive.
